Textiles Conservation

This little beadwork and stumpwork embroidery consists of silk threads, metal wires and glass beads on a silk fabric.

The textile was received in a dirty and damaged state. There were many tears and holes in the silk and some beads were loose, about to be lost.

The textile was removed from an acidic mount board, cleaned and the torn fabric was re-aligned.

A strong support fabric was dyed to match the silk which was secured in place allowing the beads and wires to be secured into the stronger fabric behind the damaged silk.

Once completed the piece was mounted on a fabric covered acid-free board and framed in conservation framing materials, protecting it from further damage and allowing it to be displayed again.
