Description

This project involved ICS conserving and relocating a series of painted Pixie O'Harris murals on the wall of the former Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital admissions building in Camperdown, Sydney. The murals were painted by Pixie O'Harris in the 1940s, and remained on display for many years before being painted over some years prior to the relocation of the hospital to Westmead. As part of the building redevelopment, ICS was engaged to conserve the murals and supervise their relocation from and upper level into the main foyer of the building.

Scope

  • Removal of paint layers covering mural to reveal mural detail
  • Consolidation of paint surface in preparation for removal from original location
  • Application of Japanese tissue paper backing, foam backing and timber shoring
  • Design and fabrication of metal support lifting structure
  • Removal of five separate mural panels and transportation on 'A' frames to storage
  • Reinstallation of murals to foyer on completion of building redevelopment
