Description

This coat of arms from Old Government House, Parramatta, was in poor condition when it came to us for treatment. There were extensive cracks across the lateral surface and numerous broken elements, including the crown on the peak which had happened some years ago. The painted areas were also in need of treatment, as they had been extensively overpainted, and were extremely dirty and dull. Paint in some of the overpainted areas was beginning to flake off. In addition, some areas of the gilded surfaces had been overpainted with bronze paint. During treatment, it became apparent that the overpaint on the unicorn was unstable, and had been applied to match the dirty surface. It was felt that the best option would be to remove it. Mechanical and chemical means were used to remove the overpaint.

Treatment

  • Cleaned surface of coat of arms.
  • Reattached crown on peak.
  • Recreated missing elements.
  • Infilled the worst disfiguring losses.
