Description

Sandstone outcrop containing inscriptions carved by quarantined people dating from 1832 to 1983. Up to 854 inscriptions within the wharf precinct. They range from simple text to elaborate images. All the inscriptions are faded from a natural breakdown of the paint finish.

  • Long term conservation of inscriptions
  • Restore legibility of inscriptions for interpretive purposes

Treatment

  • Environmental assessment - advice regarding the maintenance surrounding landscaping for the conservation of the inscriptions
  • Cleaned rock surface of loss dirt and plant matter
  • Consolidated the rock/stone surface of the inscriptions
  • Inpainted the inscriptions
