Shackleton's Hut

Project

buildings_shackletons_fulla.jpgErnest Shackleton's hut at Cape Royds was built during the Nimrod expedition in 1908-9. Many of the artefacts left behind by the expeditions remain in the hut, including nearly 400 cans of food, a wheel from the Arrol Johnston car (the first car on the continent), the acetylene gas lighting equipment and seal-skin sleeping bags. ICS was commissioned by the NZ Antarctic Heritage Trust to assess the condition of the collection and provide guidelines for its conservation and interpretation as part of the conservation management plan for the 4000 visitors anticipated to visit in 2002-2003.
